12 Months of Literary Activities: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz activities include reading extensions to incorporate other subjects into your fun and a craft tutorial for Craft Stick Characters of Oz. Part of 12 Months of Literary Activities.

I’ve never met anybody who didn’t like the story of The Wizard of Oz.  Even if they’ve never read the book.

But I’m telling you, you and your kids should totally read the book.

Because the slippers were silver, y’all.  And while the story of how they became ruby for the film is pretty cool, silver slippers are also awesome.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Activities

Again with the reading the book.  The Wicked Witch forces Dorothy to be her maid in the book.  The Tin Man is called the tin woodman. And there are even more educational ideas than in the movie.

Science

Um, research cyclones, y’all.  Or multiverses and other dimensions.  Or why monkeys don’t fly.  Or corn and cornfields. Poppies.  I mean, there are all KINDS of science-y things in this book, and you should explore them all.

Geography

Kansas, anyone?  This midwestern state has a lot of history, so learning about some of it will help your littles remember where it is.

Art

Make craft stick renditions of Dorothy’s 3 companions through Oz.  Because they are freaking. awesome.

How cute are those?  I’m crushing hard, y’all.

I mean, you could make these and use them as props while you read.  You could make up your own stories about the characters and act them out.  You could make even more characters from the book with a little creativity.  I. am. in. love.

If you’re just jumping in to the 12 Months of Literary Activities, make sure you take a look at Winnie-the-Pooh’s Very Useful Pot, Black Beauty’s Felt Childhood Meadow, Little House on the Prairie’s Craft Stick Log Cabin, and Robinson Crusoe’s Island Journal.

And come back next week, because we still have 7 months to go!

Love wins,

KT
