A Wrinkle in Time Dinner and a Movie includes recipes for Slow Cooker Pumpkin Chili and Apple Muffins to enjoy with the family film

“Do you realize how many events and choices that had to occur since the birth of the universe leading to the making of you just exactly the way you are?”

What a brilliant message for kids. Heck, when Oprah pronounced those words to Meg, it made me shiver and be proud to be me.

A Wrinkle in Time is a gorgeous, magical movie that reminds us of the power of love and the strength of being a sibling.

So you want to watch it with your kids.

A Wrinkle in Time

Yeah, as always, there are differences between this film and the beloved book. Sometimes to enjoy a film, we have to just let the book go for a couple of hours. Also, it gives us the opportunity to compare the two and try to figure our why the film makers deviated from the original story (which helps you see how much your kids paid attention to both!). I definitely had to suspend my love of the book to enjoy the movie, but the wonderful acting and cinematography kind of made it worth it.

In the latest Disney film, Meg Murray and her brother, Charles Wallace, are struggling against the rumors and gossip surrounding the disappearance of their father 4 years ago. He and their mother are scientists who had been working together to create a tesseract–a wrinkle in time that would allow them to travel about the universe in the blink of an eye. Mr. Murray discovers that love is the key to making the tesseract work and goes through it without telling anyone what he’s doing.

Always a recipe for disaster, right? Because he doesn’t come back.

So one night, the strange Mrs. Whatsit shows up at the Murray house. Then Charles Wallace introduces Meg and her school friend, Calvin, to the possibly stranger Mrs. Who. Then all the Misses (including the mysterious Mrs. Which) show up to take the kids on an adventure through space and time to find Mr. Murray and bring him home.

Again, the gorgeous visuals are what you should pay attention to. And that one quote from Oprah.

Dinner

So at the beginning of the movie when the Murrays sit down together for dinner, it looks like they’re eating chili. And since it’s fall, why not pumpkin chili? Because yum!

Dessert

They talk about cake, cake, cake in one scene of the film, so let’s make some cupcake-y tasting muffins that stick with our fall theme.

I know. If you’re a die-hard fan of the book, this one falls short. But suspend that for a couple of hours and enjoy just looking at the film. Especially when Meg, Calvin, and Charles Wallace fly on Mrs. Whatsit’s back.

I’m just sayin’– I want one.
