Story Time: Room on the Broom

Story Time: Room on the Broom-Crafts and activities for the picture book

O. M. G.

I love this book.  I still laugh out loud about having witch with french fries.  And yeah, every time the 5-Creature beast shouts, “THAT’S MY WITCH!”  I totally cackle like a 5-year-old.  Some books just do that to me.  Revert me back to childhood within a few words.  I’m not ashamed.  In fact, if you can’t think of a picture book that makes you feel that way, well.  I mean, shame on you.  But I mean it in the nicest, most encouraging, embrace-your-inner-child kind of way.

Room on the Broom is that book for me.

So how could I go through a Halloween season without giving you a Story Time for this wacky, witchy, wonderful book?  Well, I can’t.  So here we go–

Language

Let’s keep it light and fun this week.  Some of the most famous witchy words ever come from Shakespeare’s Macbeth (my very, very favorite of his plays).  The three witches caused Macbeth and his countrymen no end of trouble, but their ‘spell’ has been used and used again to represent everything witch, so they can’t be all bad.  I thought it might be fun for your littles to memorize the famous poem from the scene.  You can just use this pic, or you can print it out in my subscriber freebie, Halloween Poems.

What?  Shakespeare’s light.

And fun.

It’s all a matter of perspective..

Science

The wind wreaks havoc on the witch and her new friends.  Let your littles experiment with wind with this cool project.

I swear, this works really well.  And it’s a lot of fun to blow on it or stick it outside in the wind or put it in front of a fan.  Talk about how hard a wind it takes to make the pinwheel spin.  How strong does the wind have to be blow a hat off your head?

Food

Bewitching Brew and Witch Hat Cookies for Story Time: Room on the Broom

Witch books call for witch food.  Here’s a snack and a drink to make your day complete.

Witch Hat Cookies

Witch Hat Cookies for Story Time: Room on the Broom

These are so easy and cute.  You’re welcome.

What you need:

Chocolate sandwich cookies

Kisses candies (now that I think of it, dark chocolate would have looked better.  But I don’t like dark chocolate.  So there.)

Orange icing (REAL LIFE MOMENT–the easy little tube of orange icing I put in my cart did not make it to the checkout, so I made my icing with powdered sugar, water, and food coloring.  Also an option for you.)

What you do:

  • Unwrap the chocolates
  • Dab a bit of icing on the bottom of each chocolate and stick it to the top of a cookie
  • Run a bead of icing around the base of the chocolate for the hatband
  • Prepare for a sugar overload

Bewitching Brew

If you’re old enough to remember Orange Julius fondly, you’re going to love me in a minute.  No, I know, I mean even more. haha

What you need:

  • 2 liters orange soda, chilled
  • 46 oz pineapple juice, chilled
  • 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 32 oz vanilla ice cream, softened

What you do:

  • Mix soda, juice, and milk in a punch bowl
  • Add ice cream
  • Fall in love

No, really, that’s all you do.

I love it when they’re easy.  Halloween is coming, my friends.  Feel that electricity in the air?  (Maybe that’s because there’s less than a week to Daryl–I mean the Walking Dead season premiere.)

Love wins,

KT
