The Apple Doll by Elisa Kleven is so sweet.  Little Lizzy is about to start school, but she’s nervous about it. She’d rather stay in her beloved apple tree. So She picks her favorite apple and makes a doll out of it to take to school with her. Your kids will enjoy seeing how Lizzy overcomes her shyness with a little help from her mom and her apple doll.

Language

Lizzy loved her apple doll, and your kids will, too. Grab this free printable and have them write an acrostic poem of all things wonderful about an apple doll.Free Printble Apple Doll Acrostic Poem is a fun way to explore language while reading the picture book The Apple Doll

Science

Apple Doll Craft and Science Project Tutorial for kids

This cool activity is a craft and a science project in one. Plus a cool keeper if your kids love the idea of making their own dolls. Discuss the science with your children as you create the doll. For instance, why does dehydrating (drying ) the apple work? What is the purpose of soaking the apple in lemon juice? Why does drying the apple make it last?

What you need:

  • 1 small apple, peeled
  • Plastic knife
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • Wooden skewer
  • 5 chenille stems
  • yarn, fabric or rags, buttons, doll dress, hat, or other way of dressing your doll

What you do:

Apple Doll Step 1

  • Pick the side of the apple you want to be the face of your doll and use the plastic knife to cut eyes, nose, and mouth into the apple

Apple Doll Step 2

  • Mix the water and lemon juice and dissolve the salt in it
  • Soak your apple head in the solution for half an hour

Apple Doll Step 3

  • Start the drying process by heating your oven to the lowest setting
  • Place your apple head on parchment paper on a baking sheet and bake for an hour or two, turning occasionally to prevent the bottom from getting soppy
  • Leave the apple out to dry for 2-3 days until rubbery and more dry than wet to the touch

Apple Doll Step 4

  • Drive the skewer into the center of the bottom of the head

Apple Doll Step 5

  • Wrap a chenille stem just beneath the apple to support its weight

Apple Doll Step 6

  • Use remaining chenille stems to create arms and legs, wrapping ends around skewer

Apple Doll Step 7

  • Dress your doll using an old baby doll dress or create a dress from fabric or rags–simply use small safety pins or hot glue to pin in place
  • Add a hat with yarn or raffia glued to the inside to resemble hair

Craft

DIY Paper Apple Dolls are a great craft for toddlers and older kids both to do while reading the picture book The Apple Doll

You can never have enough apple dolls. And maybe you have very little ones or impatient kiddos who don’t want to wait for their apple doll. So Make some paper dolls for them to play with while they wait. The great thing about these dolls is your kids can completely personalize them.
